The Prometheus Trust is running a one day workshop in Islington, North London on February 27th, in association with New Acropolis. Here are the details:

The Palinode of Socrates

A workshop with Tim Addey

"Where are you going, my dear Phaedrus, and have you come from?" With these words Plato opens a dialogue which might be called his manifesto of philosophy: it draws the reader into a consideration of the fundamental questions of human life, touching upon all the primary teachings of the Platonic tradition, and showing how love and truth are intimately bound together in the philosophic life of the soul. At the heart of the dialogue is Socrates’ beautiful myth of the soul’s winged journey through the heavens in the company of the Gods, with each following her particular divine ruler – and this starting point, he claims, is a key to our entire terrestrial experience.

In this one-day workshop we will look at the central speech of Socrates (known as the palinode) in which he explores the nature of the soul – her possible immortality, her link to divinity, the source of her intellectual powers, her unquenchable thirst for beauty, her relationship with the embodied life, and her destiny which brings all these into a harmonious whole.

Our own exploration of these ideas through the palinode will be firmly based upon the view that the subject matter of the day is ourselves – not some remote theory of abstract interest, but rather one that profoundly shapes the way we live our lives. As such we will attempt to unpack the speech with as little technical jargon as possible – so a prior knowledge of Platonic philosophy (or indeed any philosophy) is not required. We will attempt to follow Socrates as he soars above the limitations of the merely material life and in so doing, perhaps, begin to unfold our wings which, he says, once carried us through a beautiful region of pure light.

Please book as early as possible as places are limited. The cost of this workshop is £45 (£25 concessions), to include light refreshments (but not lunch).

To book, contact New Acropolis: 19 Compton Terrace, Islington, N1 2UN
Telephone: 0207 359 0059 or via the web at
