One of the biggest challenges to reading Plato is finding good English translations. I'd like to propose a list of the best ones.

My concern has been to avoid the Neo-Kantian/Positivist translations in favour of the more open, readable translations which avoid Cartesian influenced pre-interpretation so alien to the original spirit of the texts.

Here are the translations of Plato I'm aware of. They are translations by Bloom, Pangle and Sachs:

Republic - translated by Allan Bloom (pdf link: http://goo.gl/br8tmB)

Laws- translated by Thomas L. Pangle (publisher's link:http://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/L/bo3631229.html)

Theaetetus- translated by Joe Sachs (Amazon:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/158510101X/qid=1114528211/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_5/002-7747858-7182460?v=glance&s=books)

Do members here have other recommendations of works by Plato, authentically translated? If so, please add your finds to this thread. I can't wait to read them!

Has anyone read Sachs' translation of the Republic? (http://www.amazon.com/dp/158510261X/ref=rdr_ext_tmb)

Thank you for these recommendations.

Yes, I have the Sachs translation of Republic and it is good - just as good as the Bloom but in different ways.

I also have his translation of Aristotle's Metaphysics and it is by far the best.
