The following lines were composed by poets last Saturday morning as a five-minute exercise in response to one, some or all of the following words
Affliction Shall Advance The Flight In Me
(which together form the final line of the George Herbert poem "Easter Wings")

A not so quick but
Intense flight to the heights
Where meaning loses its form
Well above the head, and affliction
ceases to exist.

(Georgina Ochoa de Blausten)

“Me, me, me,” is it not the constant chorus of the modern society?
Look at me, listen to me, give it to me.
The chorus is deafening.
The MPs with their expense accounts want their snouts in the nation’s coffers.
The Bankers want to satisfy their unseemly greed and hunger for all things material and bigger.
But what happens to citizens ordinary
Living under constant hunger, and needy inside the austerity mode?
No food or shelter even at Christmas time.

(Joydev Nandi)

Affliction tells met to stand back, to claim nothing.

(Pamela Douse)

Arrived at Melbourne tired and jet lagged.
Booked a new flight onwards.
Joined the boarding party, boarding
Tiny plane across the tarmac.
Slow flight, low flight,
Across the country.
Wool merchant in seat beside me ...

(Pamela Turner)

Baggage to hold me back,
or fuel to drive me forward?
I will take this heavy weight
unpack it
and take out
the tools to move me forwards.
In my head and heart and body too
Find the place that soars
and take flight
Through air, cross rock.
No difficulty or disaster
Challenge me too far
Always progress, ever on.

(Verity Owers)

Afflicted? Me?
Oh yes ...
But aren't we all?
The circumstances, situations,
That hedge us round,
Frustrate us, bend us
To grow unnatural, or
Twisted at some stage;
With luck and perseverance
To straighten, strengthen
In maturity ... Or not ...
Acceptance ... Endurance ...
Fortitude and adaption ...
Complex we are;
All of us,
Marked, medalled and emblazoned
As we suffer and survive
The scars of
Unintentional,
Unavoidable
Injuries
And become whole,
Effective individuals ...
With any luck ...

(Veronica Wallace)

Here, on the second Sunday in Lent, in the period leading up to Easter, and on the anniversary of George Herbert's death in 1633, is Herbert's poem ...

Easter Wings

Lord, who createdst man in wealth and store,
Though foolishly he lost the same,
              Decaying more and more,
                   Till he became
                          Most poor:
                           With thee
                     O let me rise
              As larks, harmoniously,
And sing this day thy victories:
Then shall the fall further the flight in me.

My tender age in sorrow did beginne:
And still with sicknesses and shame.
             Thou didst so punish sin,
                   That I became
                          Most thin.
                          With thee
                    Let me combine,
              And feel thy victory:
For, if I imp my wing on thine,
Affliction shall advance the flight in me.
