The Guardian article was followed up with four letters the following day and an article in the New Statesman http://www.newstatesman.com/economics/2013/01/whats-justification-land-value-tax.
Although Caroline Lucas did not get to read her Bill she got a slot on Today on Radio 4 the following morning. She spoke well against rather weak opposition but what was interesting was the way the topic was introduced. The interviewers briefing was quite positive suggesting that LVT had moved on from a fringe Libdem policy to "an idea whose time has come."

It is sometimes funny to see Georgist economics discussed in the media. The New Statesman (thanks for sharing it Peter) article is an example of that:
Quote: | But arguing political philosophy with the coalition also reveals the folly of trying to convince them on the benefits of a land-value tax, or indeed any tax. Because while the rhetoric is about shrinking the deficit, which new taxes help, the ideology is about shrinking the state. And if that's the aim, arguing about the value of various taxes will never win the fight. |
It's weird because that is precisely what a LVT would, as a single tax, do.

It seems the date has changed to the 26th of March, even thought the house doesn't sit on that day. Has this been kicked into the long grass? If so, why?

I'm not sure if others here have also been following the Renegade Economists' Podcast on 3CR that mentioned earlier in this thread, but it is through that I've heard about Phillip J Anderson.
He seems to specialise in economic forecasting (for a fee). He has mentioned a lot of economists that I don't know, Ricardo who I'm sure we all have heard of, but never Henry George.
Two other's he talks about are W.D Gann and Nikolai Kondratiev, who I've not heard of until now. I do know he has a book out which may or may not be worth reading. I thought I'd start a new thread to see if people have any thoughts.
Here is a rather low definition recording of him on Australian TV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pB20wF18uiQ
I'm afraid he likes to hide information for those who subscribe or at least he did until he wrote the book. That makes me question his sincerity but after watching the interview I'm pretty sure he's on track.

This week's Economist advocates Land Value Tax in its leader!
This is in the context of encouraging development of building.

|
|
Last week the subject of LVT was given an airing by comedian Mark Thomas on his Radio 4 programme The Manifesto. It is light hearted but certainly not mocking. The producer had done his research and the way it was put across evinced a positive response from the audience. Here is the link.

To hear LVT discussed in this humorous but well-informed way on radio 4 indicates it is gaining a degree of social respectability.

|
|
Last month the House of Commons library published a full (20 pages) and balanced briefing note on the subject of land value taxation. It is available here: http://www.parliament.uk/briefing-papers/SN06558
For anyone interested in the subject it is worth reading. It includes extensive quotes from the various reports that have considered LVT over the last 10 years and also relevant newspaper articles and political discussion and the overall impression it gives is that this is a policy worthy of serious consideration but sufficiently radical that it is not for the timid. It would require courage and commitment amongst the political class to take it forward.
