Here is a recent poem by John ...

Towards Unity

In seeking an identity we are, it could be said, seeking a unity with those of like Intent.
Young people are naturally drawn to such groupings.
Here enthusiasms can be raw and plainly destructive.
But even in this culture of the streets there is a seeking to belong.
The question is, to what are they striving to belong?
Cynics may have ready answers,
But the lives of drug addicts who climb from their state and their addiction
Tells of a courage that belies all scepticism.
Indeed, it seems they shine like beacons of hope and compassion.
In the world of relative opinion that the senses often leave unquestioned
The wider picture of the human state is often lost amidst the general struggle of the hour.
Yet some, reflecting on the state of things, ask questions:
Why such a struggle, why such poverty in a land that clearly is abundant?
Such questions jump the bridge to freedom.
Not a freedom for “me” but a freedom meant for all.
This is unity.

The seat of Grace

An overheated agitated body cannot rest
Indeed, it is the second night that rest has been denied.
The future - is there one!?
Then a sliver of cool air in the nostril captures the attention.
The only coolness in this overheated state
Attention is attracted and sustained and the agitation is no more
Instead a watching in the cool air grows without distraction.
There is no active ego.
Awareness holds the will, until the growing presence is profound
A deepening attention knows there is no cancer in this world of cause.
Indeed, attention could have rested there for ever.
But the body moves. Nature’s rule demands attention.
The toilet calls!
Tentatively I rise; obedience is obligatory.
Expecting the usual blood soaked avalanche,
But no -- wonder is amazed, for the stool is fashioned like a work of art in clear
untroubled water.
And then it’s back to bed.
The body is at rest, but grace is not commanded,
The world of cause is not re-entered.
At last sleep comes.
Dawn also comes, and the action of the day awaits.
Reluctantly I arise, but a strong reality of wonder and of gratitude remain.
This sustained me for at least two days

JS 3rd December 2014.

A Shakespearean reflection from John ...

We Are Such Stuff As Dreams Are Made On ...
(The Tempest, Act Four, Scene One)

What is Shakespeare’s stuff?
What are dreams?
Dreams cannot claim to be reality.
Then who are we to dream? Who am I?
Is it the ego?
Surely not, for that ever dancing creature rarely rests.
What then is true “I ness”?
Ego cannot “do” it!
Can we then conclude that it is given?
If this is so, how can true “I ness” be given by other than itself?
Is this Plato’s One?
The tradition of the west confirms it, as does the Vedic tradition of the east.
Not two they say emphatically.
Knowledge arises in the One to meet a need,
For knowledge is the very nature of the One.
