This is the text of a talk I gave last Saturday as part of the Grantchester Summer Lectures organised by the School of Philosophy, Cambridge.

The talk was advertised as “a look at wit and wisdom - asking what they are in themselves, and making a survey of where they are to be found in English poetry”.

It takes the form of a presentation, with quotations from George Herbert, William Shakespeare, Alexander Pope and Emily Dickinson.

Comments welcome!
