It was over 35 years ago
That Heathrow opened its doors to me.
(it was called a working holiday)
But Time has a way
of creating an illusion in the play.

Back then, did I leave Sydney tomorrow, or arrive yesterday?
And we, down under, are we behind or in front, pray?
Well, the hemisphere was different
There was no Southern Cross
The seasons, too, had changed hands,
as they danced, shared a glace and parted aloft.

It was all so very different...
So how did I know I belonged?
Why was it that the feet recognised the soil
and thence felt as though they were just floating alone?
My heart said 'this is home'
Reason knew it too,
It was an unmistakable knowing
(these words just won't do!)

Now, will Time have to conform?
Because I had been there before.
I had walked through a different door.
Was it is days of yore
I rode in a carriage in London before?

The clippity-clob of horse's hooves on cobble stone
is music to my ears.
The sound never fails to move me.
(if heard in a movie or on TV)
It strikes a chord - comforting, confirming,
completely content.
I have been happy and I have been loved here.

The bard said 'Love's not Time's fool'.
The heart does not forget, not completely,
It operates across the dimensions...
Just as the aircraft flies through the time zones
then glides down again, at rest, at home.

Time performs his role, but who translates the part?
For some, we are told, they knew from the very start.

OK.. press 'submit', send, Surrender, before the mind says No
By what illusion will this arrive, almost before I said Go?

Cheryl

I'm so glad you wrote this and posted it here.

It describes so well exactly what I experienced myself on my first visit to Greece -- 'I'm at home here, I know myself better here... I shall go back, because that's the way of things; but I shall leave a part of myself here, and take Greece back with me forever...'

Strange, that sometimes we have to go 'away' to new impressions, in order to return home to ourselves.. Or have I just defined meditation ?! Idea

Thanks again,

Michael
