I don't normally post details of Prometheus Trust books as they get published, but our latest volume touches on an area which I know to be of especial interest to the SES, so I hope participants of the forum will forgive my plugging it here.
The "deep ecology" movement which was very much started by Arne Naess in the early 1970's claims that the ecological crisis which lies before us is much more a philosophical crisis than one of particular behaviour: that the assumptions which come with the general philosophy of the modern age are undermining our relation to the natural world. It argues that unless we address the misunderstandings inherent in our approach to the world, attempts at "fixing" the problem in the external world will fail in the long term.
Our anthology (drawn from some of the papers and lectures presented to the Promethues Trust's 2017 conference on this theme) comprises 13 chapters which range from the highly academic to the very non-academic: from Taoism to Platonism, from Hermeticism to St Francis of Assisi, from 'enlightenment' philosophers to post-enlightenment thinkers, the volume invites the reader to a deeper level of engagement with one of the most pressing problems of the modern age than is normally the case.
Having listened to Ian Mason's 2016 lecture on "Harmony with Nature", I'd be interest to hear what further thoughts are emerging amongst the contributors to this and the other forums along these lines.
More details about our anthology can be found here http://www.prometheustrust.co.uk/html/other_books.html#DPhil

Dear Tim,
I think he reads the forum, but, to make sure, I'll print a copy of your post and give it to Ian on Monday. I'll inform some others also who may be interested.
Regards,
Pete |
