Two delightful new poems written by Pam Turner and presented this month to the School’s Saturday morning Discovering Poetry group.
For the Tenth of May
A poem by the tenth of May?
That’s only twelve short days away.
I started one some weeks ago -
The garden’s looking lovely, though,
And needs attention all the time
I’ve made that scan and even rhyme.
The previous poem went astray;
It got too detailed; lost its way.
All my efforts were in vain.
It’s really best to start again.
Another subject to inspire;
Not so earth-bound, something higher.
Clouds and angels, bugles blaring,
Shafts of sunlight, fireworks flaring.
Steady on, that’s O.T.T.
Calm down quietly; now, let’s see -
Sharpen senses, quiet the mind,
Still the heart, leave dreams behind.
Just be normal, love the day.
That’s the poem, no more to say.

Black-Pearl Morning
Still April on the calendar.
But this morning is blissful May.
That strange black-pearl haze at the sky’s edge,
And the low wooded hill looks high
And so far away, distant,
Looking back at us through half-closed eyes
Like a sun-warmed cat.
The air is full of the scent of Hawthorn,
Whose branches hang thick with curving, cream-white cylinders.
The robin’s conversational chirruping
And the blackbird’s ecstatic, whistling song
Add their spring sounds to the quiet discussions
Amongst the racks of bedding plants.
No-one hurries with their rumbling trolley,
With its colourful load of bouncing, shuddering plants.
Everyone moves gently, playing their May-morning part,
Anticipating lunch and the afternoon’s planting out.
