"I have nothing to say"

What! You have nothing to say?
You've been "hibernating in a hole through the gloom of winter"?

You have nothing to say
When the blue-tits flit gaily in and out of the feeder,
When the irises smile sweetly, one after another,
And your cat leaps from chairback to chairback
To nestle in your lap, with purrs vibrating like a generator?

You have nothing to say?
How dare you have nothing to say!

Nan Kay-Walton
(Poem written for and presented to the School’s Saturday morning Discovering Poetry group)

*****

This is a poem written by Nan prompted by the title ...

Snowboard

Wow! What a sling they have given you!
It wraps your arm tightly to your body
Broad canvas over your shoulder
Across your forearm and round your body.

Wow! What a sling they have given you!
If I hadn’t heard you were “a snowboard accident”
I would surely have thought it a straightjacket.

You say that it should have been a straightjacket.
Maybe that’s true for a middle-aged man
Hurtling down the mountain on a snowboard.
