The Poet and the Oystercatcher

The poet asked the oystercatcher
feeding on the shore
why is the world my oyster
when all the earth seems poor,
I know those pearls they glisten
adorned round ladies necks
appear as though from nowhere
wrapped round such tiny specks,
oh why is the world my oyster
shy bird won't you tell,
when the mountains are all falling
and the darkness cast it's spell?

I have no rhyme or reason
to tell you what you seek
for the sands of time keep moving
on each morning of the week,
you know I need no language
to talk to sea or sky
and the secrets that I carry
go with me when I fly.

Why is the world your oyster
why should I tell you thus?
when the words that I may tell you
would be trampled in the fuss,
for fools don't like to listen
to things they're often told,
exchanging all their senses
for a pocket full of gold.

The poet shed some tears
for things that he had lost
for his burden it was heavy
the price was twice the cost,
come bird tell I ask you
the answer to my rhyme,
for the tide again is turning
running with the time?

The bird broke into song
both ears too restrained,
the heavens they did open
on both of them it rained,
Sit beside the waters
just be, be quiet still
and the glory of creation
your priceless soul shall fill,
for the world it is your oyster
if you would but believe,
for the more that you shall give
the more you shall receive.

Flesh

Have you noticed
it ends where it begins
it only goes so far
round the body
but you
seem to go
on forever,
I can't find
words that reach so far,
perhaps the mind
cannot go,
where you already are.

The Sky at the End of the Street

Blowing willy nilly clouds
like monuments carved
in mist
and there the moon
old ancient face
and crescent list,
the sky at the end of the street
and beginning
is the same as yours
that touches face and pores
we share the air the sky the trees
and wring out poems
from every starlit breeze
and conjur words from where
goodness only knows,
the sky at the end of the street dances,
playing patterns with your prose.

Poetry Mad.

Is it normal
to go shopping
and bring back a poem ?
white cabbage
spring onions
cream
crusty rolls
and
The sky at the end of the street,
God knows how I managed
a lottery ticket as well.

Everywhere you look Wisdom can be found, from the book
"God makes The Rivers To Flow".

Thought to be from the Sioux, native American.

Let Me Walk In Beauty

O Great Spirit
whose voice I hear in the winds
and whose breath gives life to all the world,
I am small and weak
I need your strength and wisdom.
Let me walk in beauty
and let my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset.
Make my hands respect the things you have made
and my ears grow sharp to hear your voice.
Make me wise so that I may understand the things
you have taught my people.
Let me learn the secrets you have hidden
in every leaf and rock.
I seek strength not to be greater than my brother or sister
but to fight my greatest enemy, myself.
Make me always steady
to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes
So when life fades as the fading sunset
my spirit may come to you without shame.

Great Spirit of love,
come to me with the power of the North.
Make me courageous when the cold winds of life
fall upon me.
Give me strength and endurance for everything
that is harsh,
everything that hurts,
everything that makes me squint.
Make me move through life ready to take what comes
from the North.

Spirit who come out of the East,
come to me with the power of the rising sun.
Let there be light in my word.
Let there be light on the path that I walk.
Let me remember always that you give the gift
of a new day.
Never let me be burdened with sorrow by not
starting over.

Great Spirit of creation,
send me the warm and soothing winds
from the South.
Comfort me and caress me when I am tired and cold.
Enfold me as your gentle breezes enfold your leaves
on the trees.
And as you give to all the earth your warm,
moving wind.
Give to me so that I may grow close to you in warmth.
Great life-giving Spirit
I face the West,
the direction of the sundown.
Let me remember every day that the moment will come
when my sun will go down.
Never let me forget that I must fade into you.
Give me beautiful colour.
Give me a great sky for setting,
and when it is time to meet you,
I come with glory.
