Here a poem that describes so well what we feel at times - in stead of being happy that it is only a dream...

A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM - Edgar Allan Poe

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand

How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

Verena

I was glad to see that you have pointed our attention towards 'dream'. I've recently been quizzing the Hindu pundits about the 'dreaming state', whose significance -- apart from the standard 'disapproving' use as metaphor -- seems to have escaped the familiar shastra texts.

The response has been very cautious... but the general view seems to be that the creation of those dreams and their fleeting memory is deeply connected with the other states, in the cycle of our experiencing day, and of an importance not yet assessed.

And as to the 'creative dreams' of poets -- the Hindu pundits are as unforthcoming as Platocrates himselves !

Michael,
A very late reply but it awakened the desire to search for references. I often do see life as a dream now, not all that different from the dream at night. I do not mean a poetic vision or imagined scenes - though what else is our universe but imagined scenes... There are references in Mandukyopanishad of course, Brihadaranyaka upanishad and Supreme Yoga.
Thank you for your unfailing positive attentiveness!
Verena

Verena, thanks.

I subsequently found a reference (unsourced) to the seven types of dream.. and have now lost the reference... I'll try to find it again. It certainly confirmed the scope of the 'dreaming' state.
