|'Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate – our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure…’
(attributed to Nelson Mandela)
In these troubled economic times we may be reassured by the above statement that we can make the changes required. The purpose of this forum is to encourage a lively discussion on current affairs in economics and to deepen understanding of economic principles - in particular those that could help transform economic systems, communities and individuals towards justice, equity and sustainability.
The following poem by William Wordsworth is aimed at inspiring discussion:
The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers:
Little we see in nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The Winds that will be howling at all hours
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
It moves us not – Great God! I’d rather be
A pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus coming from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn.
There are several topics underway and you can contribute to the existing one (‘thread’) or begin a new topic. It will be helpful to try to ensure we keep to the subject within a topic and do not start a new topic too similar to one that exists.
There is much to discuss - please join in!
